Ottawa Honors

The Ottawa Kansas Veterans Day Committee invites persons who have served in the United States Military or currently serving to be part of the Ottawa Honors Patriotic Pole Banner Project.

It is with great honor that the City of Ottawa is purchasing the brackets that will be fixed to the light poles to hang the banners. The City recognizes our community of veterans and the service they rendered and continue to render to this great country of ours.

Banner orders turned in by September 1, 2024, will be displayed on Main Street for Veterans Day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I submit a photo of my honoree in the formal military uniform?

Photos of your honoree do not have to be in formal military attire. Please make sure, though, that the photo of your honoree represents them as a service member. For example, you can submit a photo of your honoree wearing a field uniform and standing before a tent.

Can I submit a digital photo?

Unfortunately, we can not get the same quality from an emailed photo.  Many sponsors have made copies of photos at Walgreens.

Will my photo be returned?

Yes, your photo will be safeguarded, treated with the utmost respect, and returned to the sponsor. Please remove the photo from the frame before submitting it, as many photographs are brittle. We do not want to damage it by removing the frame ourselves.

When are the banners displayed along city streets?

We have much to be thankful for to the city of Ottawa. The utility workers begin hanging the banners in mid-October and take them down at the end of November. This helps prevent wear and tear on the banners from hanging year-round and also gives the community something to look forward to each year.

Where is my banner stored when it’s not hanging on the city light poles?

The Ottawa Honors Committee stores the banners for the community. We deliver the banners to the Ottawa Utility Department at the beginning of October and then pick up the banners at the end of November.
